New Poll Finds Public Takes Local Star for Granted

ATLANTA, December 9, 2025. A national survey commissioned by the Solar Save Foundation finds that the public overwhelmingly takes its local star for granted, confirming concerns the Foundation has long held on the public’s behalf. The poll surveyed 2,204 adults between November 3 and November 19 and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, a margin considerably smaller than the one the public extends to the Sun.

Key findings include the following.

1. 94.6 percent of respondents expect the Sun to rise tomorrow, and 0 percent could produce documentation supporting the expectation.
2. 88.2 percent have not thanked the Sun in the past 12 months. Among the 4.1 percent who thanked it once, the most commonly cited venue was a beach.
3. Asked who is responsible for the continued operation of the Sun, 61.8 percent said no one, 24.9 percent said the government, and 0.4 percent correctly identified the Foundation.
4. 2.3 percent believe the Sun will last forever, a position held by no astronomer and, as far as outreach has established, not by the Sun.

“These numbers describe a nation that has enjoyed 365 consecutive solar appearances and cannot say where they came from,” said Diane R. Cobb, Vice President for Public Awareness. “Gratitude that is never expressed is difficult to distinguish from the nighttime lobby’s preferred outcome.”

The Foundation notes that the public it surveyed is served by exactly 1 local star, which simplifies the accountability question considerably.

“In four decades of survey research, I have never measured indifference this stable,” said Dr. Lillian M. Osei, Director of Public Sentiment Research. “Our modeling suggests it has held for approximately 4.6 billion years, within the margin of error.”

The findings have been referred to the Office of Public Awareness, which has scheduled meetings. The Sun was briefed on the results as a courtesy and has not acknowledged the briefing.
