Foundation Announces Five Billion Year Strategic Framework

ATLANTA, October 14, 2025. The Solar Save Foundation today announced the Five Billion Year Strategic Framework, believed to be the longest planning document ever ratified by a nonprofit board. The framework covers the entire remaining service life of the Sun, with time reserved at the end for evaluation.

The plan adopts the Foundation’s planning horizon of 4.8 billion years, an organizational estimate deliberately more conservative than the scientific figure of about five billion, because stewardship demands a margin. Within that horizon, the Foundation’s 27 strategic initiatives have been organized into 12 epochs, the first of which is scheduled to conclude within 18 months. Scheduling the remaining 11 epochs has been formally designated a deliverable of the first.

“Our predecessors had 4.6 billion years to produce this document and left the page blank,” said Wendell A. Prescott, President and Chief Solar Officer. “We do not judge them. We note only that the drafting fell to this generation, and that this generation arrived with a binder.”

The framework provides for mandatory review every 250 million years, an interim assessment at the midpoint, and succession language ensuring that no future era inherits an unplanned star. The board has already appointed the committee that will one day appoint that committee’s successor.

“A five billion year plan is not ambition. It is scheduling,” said Eleanor V. Hargrove, Executive Vice President for Long Horizon Strategy. “Families plan for their grandchildren. This board plans for the retirement of a specific star, and it intends to be early.”

The Foundation acknowledged that certain organizations continue to describe 4.8 billion years as plenty of time. The framework addresses that position in Appendix C, Complacency, which is the longest appendix.

A courtesy copy of the framework was delivered to the Sun through standard channels. Receipt has not been acknowledged, and the framework contains language anticipating this.
