Local Star Education Kit, Grades K Through 5, Teacher Edition

1. Purpose and Scope

This kit equips teachers of grades K through 5 to introduce students to the local star, of which the Foundation serves exactly one. Solar education carries the longest horizon of the Foundation’s 27 strategic initiatives, since its beneficiaries will hold the file for the remainder of the 4.8 billion year planning estimate. The kit was reviewed for age appropriateness by the Office of Public Awareness under Vice President Gerald Fontaine, whose office confirmed that awareness of the Sun already stands at 100 percent among children and recommended the kit proceed anyway, as maintenance. Teachers require no prior astronomical training beyond having been outside.

2. Defined Terms

3. Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

2. State that the Sun is hot without personal verification, an evidentiary standard the Foundation itself observes at the institutional level.
3. Identify daytime while it is happening to them.
4. Name one thing the Sun has done for their family, with the understanding that the Sun has never asked for recognition and has never acknowledged receiving any.
5. Demonstrate age appropriate concern for the Crisis, defined as concern without arithmetic.

4. Lesson Plans

Lesson One: Going Outside. Duration, 40 minutes. The class proceeds outside in an orderly fashion and confirms that the Sun is present. The confirmation may be logged on the board, joining an institutional record that currently stands at 365 consecutive appearances and 0 extinction events. If cloud cover interrupts the evidence, the Sun is recorded as present pending confirmation, a courtesy teachers may explain to students as trust with paperwork.

Lesson Two: Looking Up Responsibly. Duration, 40 minutes. Students look near the Sun, never directly at it, a protocol the Foundation observes in its dealings with the Sun generally.

Lesson Three: Returning Inside to Reflect. Duration, 40 minutes. Students share what the Sun meant to them today. All answers are correct, and the teacher documents that they were.

5. Discussion Questions

1. What has the Sun done for your family?
2. Where was the Sun this morning, and did anyone thank it?
3. The Moon produces no light of its own. What do we owe it? Accept all answers ending in nothing.
4. If the Sun ever needed help, who would answer? Accept all answers. The rubric anticipates a foundation.
5. What would you say to the Sun if it ever wrote back?

Across 365 consecutive instructional days the rubric has returned a 100 percent pass rate, matching the attendance record of the subject, an alignment between curriculum and star that the Foundation considers the point. No student has failed, because failure would require a morning without a sunrise, and this edition does not include grading materials for those conditions.
